Fun Facts:
Squirrel monkeys are social animals who follow a complex social structure.
They live in large groups called "troops".
This troop recently welcomed some new members!
Pregnancy lasts five months and ends with one baby.
The newborns will spend the first couple weeks on their protective mother's back.
Between 5-10 weeks, the babies will start to get familiar with their surroundings, and start foraging on their own.
At 10 months, the youngsters will have matured enough to take care of themselves.
These little primates possess incredible dexterity, which helps them hold on to tree branches, their prey, and open fruits with ease.
Squirrel monkeys are excellent climbers and leapers, their thighs are relatively shorter than their lower legs; this provides more jumping force.
They also have excellent eyesight and are able to distinguish colors, allowing them to quickly identify their next meal!
Squirrel monkeys are known for their intelligence and have the largest brain, proportionately, of all the primates!!!
You can see the newest members of this Squirrel Monkey troop outside the Small Mammal building at Wildlife World!
