sustainable mobility project Traffic Snake Game Resultsss 2014-2017

This video summarises the results of 3 years of Traffic Snake Game (2014-2017).

The Traffic Snake Game was created by Mobiel 21 and started as small campaign with only a handful of schools in Flanders, Belgium. Evidence had shown that the campaign successfully increases sustainable transport modes and reduces CO2. These days, the campaign reaches yearly around 1.000 schools, 200.000 children and 15.000 families in Flanders alone. The Netherlands and Austria were early adopters, but now no less than 18 countries are ready for their own flavour of this successful strategy that encourages parents to try alternatives to the car for home-school trips. The campaign is fun, effective and easy to implement.

The Traffic Snake Game Network has been established in order to spread and support the good practice across Europe. This Network with National Focal Points in each country replicates, transfers and expands the uptake of the campaign. As such, they actively stimulate the demand for sustainable transport concerning home-school trips, resulting in an increase of low-carbon transport, a more sustainable mobility culture and a reduction of energy consumption and emissions.

In February 2017, TSG Network celebrated 3 EU-supported project years. In those years, the Traffic Snake Game campaign took place in 19 countries. So far, the impressive amount of 177.587 pupils in 1.192 schools played the game*. The EU-wide savings in this period reached 2.458.853 kilometres of car trips and 397 tonnes of CO2. (* Data collection 2014-2016, school year 2016-2017 not fully included as it is ongoing.)

The target of the TSG project was to generate a modal shift with the (travel) behaviour of school children, of at least 15% more sustainable trips during the campaign and a retention effect of at least 7% after the action. The amount of sustainable trips combined for 2014-2017 went from 63% before the campaign to 78% during the campaign. Three weeks after the end of the campaign the share of sustainable trips slightly dropped to 76%, which is still a significant improvement compared to the baseline share. This means that the modal shift goal has been achieved!
