Diversity, or as it is some times called, redundancy, is a well-known approach for designing resilient systems. In the context of communications networks, it is typically synonymous with the availability of multiple, disjoint paths to a destination. In wireless settings, the availability of multiple paths arises naturally, and the challenge is in properly exploiting them. In large-scale wired networks such as the Internet, the distributed design decisions behind their deployment often make it difficult to even ascertain the presence of path diversity, and the many policy constraints under which the Internet operates can further limit it. In this talk, I will first briefly report on an investigation seeking to establish the level of path diversity available in the Internet, and review simple solutions to improve it. The results hint at the fact that Internet resiliency could be enhanced by modifying its protocols to better leverage existing diversity. Next, I will outline a simple multipath protocol aimed at wireless mesh networks with variable link conditions, and show how its reliance on multiple paths can significantly improve transmission stability even under adverse link conditions. Finally, I will outline why in spite of the significant benefits that multipath solutions can afford in both wired and wireless settings, fully realizing those benefits may call for coordinated changes across networks and end-systems.
